The end of that spring into summer, we started sleeping together again. It was different. We got so mean with each other.

I yanked at his hair and told him to come. I asked him to hit me. I said, I bet you can’t do it, but he did. Afterwards I sat on the toilet with him dripping out of me and he apologised through the bathroom door and I said, What for? I told you to do it. I washed my hands, unlocked the door to him, pressed my palms to his face. I asked you to, I said.

I think I shouldn’t have done it. I didn’t like how it made me feel, he said.

Like you could get carried away?

He shook his head. No, he said. He looked disgusted. Like I’m a bloke who beats women.

Early one morning, out in the backyard, I almost stepped on a copperhead. I bolted inside, scared city kid, yelping for Damien. He went out and cut off its head with a spade. I yelled at him: I didn’t want you to kill it.

Well, what would you have done?

I don’t know, I said. Not that. Aren’t they supposed to be timid?

It could have got Eggs.

The weeks were so long.
